  • The Queen has hinted Prince Charles could take over from her as head of the Commonwealth

"I am deeply touched and honoured by the decision of Commonwealth Heads of State and Government that I should succeed The Queen, in due course, as Head of the Commonwealth", Prince Charles said in a statement that was tweeted by Clarence House.

Such a decision Commonwealth leaders approved on Friday at Windsor castle, reports Sky News, citing sources, writes the Chronicle.info with reference on the European truth.

The Queen has said earlier that it was her "sincere wish" that Prince Charles would follow her in the role.

The event is a break in tradition for the Queen who usually spends her birthday privately with little public celebration, although there were nationwide events to mark her 90th.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had said during a roundtable meeting with fellow leaders that Commonwealth countries should make the most of the network, which has functioned as a trade bloc.

While the Queen remained strictly apolitical in her 65 years as Monarch, Prince Charles has a history of environmental activism-writing many letters to ministers.

CHOGAM takes place every two years and brings together 54 member countries mostly former British colonies.

With the latest development, leaders of the 16 commonwealth nations have concurred.

"It is my honest wish that the Commonwealth will continue to offer stability and continuity for future generations, and will decide that one day the Prince of Wales should carry on the important work started by my father in 1949".

Charles represented her at the 2013 summit in Colombo.

Rwanda will become the first African nation to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting since Uganda in 2007.

Prince Charles also made a tacit pitch for the role, saying the Commonwealth had been a "fundamental feature" of his life since first visiting Malta at age five. Join our Facebook group for the latest updates on Princess Diana, Prince Harry, Kate Middleton, Prince William, and all things royal!
