  • Charging Decision in Prince's Death Coming Thursday

The investigation into how Prince obtained the highly addictive painkiller is now closed.

The revelation comes as a Minnesota prosecutor announced no one will be charged in the music legend's death almost two years ago, as a doctor tied to the case agreed to pay $30,000 in federal fines.

No criminal charges will be filed in connection with the death of Prince, a Minnesota prosecutor announced on Thursday.

Metz said there was no evidence that the 57-year-old had any idea that the pills contained a drug that is 30 to 40 times stronger than heroin.

He added that nothing in the evidence suggests that he knowingly ingested Fentanyl.

The week before, Schulenberg reportedly prescribed Percocet meant for Prince to his friend Kirk Johnson, which the doctor allegedly said was done to protect the singer's privacy.

"There is no evidence that the pill or pills that actually killed Prince were prescribed by a doctor".

"Doctors are trusted medical professionals and, in the midst of our opioid crisis, they must be part of the solution", U.S. Attorney Greg Brooker said Thursday.

Prince, real name Prince Rogers Nelson, battled opioid addiction for years leading up to his death. Investigators have not been able to determine who provided the deadly pills to prince.

Law enforcement had been investigating Prince's death for the past two years. Prince made an emergency landing in Moline, Illinois, where emergency responders gave him 2 shots of Narcan to save his life.

"The bottom line is we simply do not have sufficient evidence to charge anyone with a crime related to Prince's death", Mark Metz, the attorney of Carver County, home to Prince's Paisley Park estate, told reporters. Schulenberg also ran unspecified tests on Prince and showed up at Paisley Park on the day Prince died.

Schulenberg also admitted that Johnson asked him to prescribe pain medication to Prince on April 14, a week before the musicians death, because Prince was experiencing hip pain and had a concert that night in Atlanta - the show would be notable for being his last full concert. But the documents don't reveal the big missing piece in the criminal investigation: Where did Prince get the fentanyl that killed him?

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Schulenberg will pay the fine and be monitored under a two-year agreement with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration as part of the settlement. Andrew Kornfeld was carrying buprenorphine, a medication that can be used to help treat opioid addiction. Schulenberg disputes that, but is paying $30,000 to settle a civil violation.

The settlement "is neither an admission of facts nor liability by Dr. Schulenberg", federal prosecutors said.

A toxicology report after his death found an "exceedingly high" level of the opioid fentanyl in his body.
