Zuma is being tried before a Durban high court on a 16-count charge of corruption relating to a 30 billion rand ($2.20 billion) arms deal arranged in the late 1990s.

After just 15 minutes of legal discussions in the packed courtroom A of the Durban High Court, the case was adjourned until June 8 by judge Themba Sishi.

The former president faces charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering. He is accused of accepting bribes from French arms firm Thales via his financial adviser at the time.

Charges against Mr Zuma were filed but then set aside by the National Prosecuting Authority shortly before he successfully ran for president in 2009.

Zuma may also apply for a stay of prosecution, Downer said meaning he does not want the charges to go ahead in a court of law because he claims the proceedings are politically motivated.

Zuma said he made a decision to resign in order to prevent bloodshed as no life should be lost because of him.

Speaking to hundreds of supporters outside the High Court in Durban, Zuma also took a swipe at those whom he said he trusted but did now not support him. Zuma was sacked as deputy president and two years later was charged.

However, the opponents of the ex-South African leader think that the court trial is long overdue.

South Africa's former President Jacob Zuma has been charged with corruption.

"I keep asking what has Zuma done and no-one has an answer for me", he told the crowds.

After his court appearance, a pugnacious Zuma addressed thousands of supporters gathered near the courthouse.

The ANC asked Mr Zuma's supporters not to wear its colours outside court on Friday but many did not follow this advice and were seen dressed in black, green and yellow.

"100% Not Guilty", was the slogan on at least one T-shirt worn by a supporter - a 2018 take on the old Zuma slogan "100% Zulu boy".

The ruling party leadership had instructed him to resign in February after a leadership crisis that destabilised the ANC, which was already weakened by other scandals during his presidency.

Current NPA head, Shaun Abrahams, announced last month that charges against Zuma would be reinstated.

"I would want to believe that as an innocent man, he is definitely not anxious", the domestic News24 agency qouted Edward Zuma as saying.

At the core is an allegation that Mr Zuma accepted a bribe to help Thales win a multi-million dollar government contract - allegations Mr Zuma denies.
