Senate committee may oppose Mike Pompeo as U.S. secretary of state

However, since Republican Senator Rand Paul and all 10 committee Democrats have announced opposition, Pompeo will not be approved by the committee unless someone changes their position.

The editors said a successful attempt by members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to reject Pompeo in a vote Monday would, nevertheless, only be a "Pyrrhic, short-term victory".

With Republican Rand Paul and Democrats on the panel opposed to making the Central Intelligence Agency director the top USA diplomat, the committee may vote narrowly against President Donald Trump's nominee on Monday (April 23) evening.

Democratic lawmakers are under pressure from their base to oppose the president, but some fear losing re-election over being labeled obstructionists.

"If you're asking me if he should on Tuesday, be confirmed as secretary of state, or Monday, I guess is when the vote is up, I don't support that, no", she said.

Still, some observers predict a historic setback for the president in the Foreign Relations Committee vote.

There's just one instance where any Cabinet member has been confirmed after an unfavourable vote in committee - Commerce Secretary Henry Wallace in 1945, according to the Senate Historical Office.

Amid tough committee questioning of Pompeo last week, the White House looked to burnish his credentials to serve as the nation's next top diplomat by highlighting the revelation that he had met in secret with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in advance of a potential summit between him and Trump.

All Democrats on the committee are expected to vote against Pompeo, 54. It's more than a little ironic, especially given the deference usually shown to presidents when making foreign-service appointments. "Republicans have come on board and supported Hillary Clinton, John Kerry".

"I realize my Democratic friends in many cases feel like that in supporting Pompeo, it's a proxy for support of the Trump administration policies, which many of them abhor".

The White House would prefer to avoid such a fight, of course.

"They have to decide that they want to put the safety and the security and the diplomacy of our country ahead of their own political games, and we're very hopeful that they will", Sanders told Fox News.

"We expect Democrats to get on board and focus on what's best for this country, not what's best for their midterm elections", Sanders said, adding: "We know how good of a candidate and how qualified [Pompeo] is".

"When I met with Director Pompeo, we had a productive conversation about the complex security challenges we face, including the unsafe threat posed by North Korea's nuclear missile program", he said in the statement. "He should certainly be supportive of what the president is trying to do".

The showdown will take place at 5 ET today, unless Corker decides to postpone it or to simply report it out with no recommendation at all.

That does need some explanation.
