  • Surgeon General Recommends More People Carry Overdose-Reversing Drug

Adams said 95 per cent of all insured Americans are covered to purchase naloxone.

The United States Surgeon General urged the public to carry naloxone and learn how to use it.

Washington health officials Friday joined the U.S. Surgeon General in urging more Americans to carry naloxone - a life-saving medication that can reverse opioid overdoses.

Adams mentioned mounting the accessibility of naloxone and increasing treatment facilities are key to assisting deal with opioid overdoses and addiction, which are taking lives of more individuals every year compared to traffic accidents. "It is time to make sure more people have access to this lifesaving medication, because 77 percent of opioid overdose deaths occur outside of a medical setting and more than half occur at home". The organization requested 500 naloxone kits from the Salt Lake County Division of Behavioral Health, he said.

The drug comes as an injection or nasal spray.

In 2016, 63,632 people died from drug overdoses; opioids were involved in about two-thirds of them. Naloxone is not habit forming, and it has no negative effects when administered to a person who does not have opioids in their system.

"I think what's really important to know is in a lot of cases especially as the opioids become more and more potent, a single dose is not enough and so these patients can basically re-overdose without reusing drugs", said Nick Eastman, Clinical Supervisor for Tri-State Ambulance. Laws have been passed by all states intended for escalating the availability of the drug, as per the news release of a surgeon general, and in the majority of states, it can be asked at pharmacies devoid of a prescription. It also protects those overdosing themselves.

Anyone interested in picking up a free naloxone kit can do so by visiting the Odyssey House admission office, 344 E. 100 South in Salt Lake City, which is open 8 a.m.to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
