On Monday, the Sauk Rapids police were summoned to the Pleasantview Elementary School after an 8-year-old boy attacked three of his classmates with a kitchen knife. The incident resulted in three students being injured and the aggressor was contained in the office.

Beise says the boy was interviewed by police and released to his parents.

The boy allegedly cut three children with the knife in less than a minute.

The report is being forwarded to the Benton County Attorney's Office.

The incident happened about 7:15 a.m.as students were arriving for class, Watkins told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis.

Close to 100 parents and students who have walked the halls of The Foundation School for Autism gathered for the school's first ever homecoming celebration.

Chief Perry Beise says the victims aged 8, 9 and 13 suffered "superficial wounds" requiring stitches in the attack before classes started Monday at Pleasantview Elementary in Sauk Rapids. The chief says he doesn't know if the boy had been bullied or had mental health issues.

Beise says authorities don't file charges against children that young, they instead try to get them help.

The event comes two months after Nikolas Cruz, a 19-year-old former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, opened fire in a hallway in the Parkland, Florida, school, killing 17 students and staff members. School officials say they will work with the family of the attacker and law enforcement in dealing with the incident. There are approximately 790 students enrolled at the elementary school.
