  • TSX, Montreal Exchange shut down Friday due to technical problems

Because of the timing of the failure Friday, TMX Group stated there wasn't time to ensure an orderly market re-open and closing that day.

Toronto's main stock exchange operator, TMX Group Ltd, chose to shut down the market after the technical issues came into play and through several Tweets on Twitter, said that all those participating in the market on Friday were "equally impacted and are unable to connect to our exchanges". We apologize for the inconvenience.

TMX Group later released a statement saying they had identified the issue that caused the outage, but did not provide any specifics on the matter.

Canada's stock market was downed on Friday due to technical issues which lead to numerous stock markets participants being unable to participate in the main exchange. Trading is expected to resume Monday.

The TMX Group operates numerous Canadian exchanges, including the Toronto Stock Exchange, the TSX Venture Exchange, and the Montréal Exchange. The five-largest stocks traded in the Toronto Stock Exchange are the Royal Bank of Canada, Toronto-Dominion Bank, Bank of Nova Scotia, Suncor Energy and Canadian National Railway.

"There have got to be people out there who need things sold today and they're screwed", he said.

By 3:30 p.m., TMX tweeted that trading will not resume.

Before trading stopped, the S&P/TSX Composite Index was up 0.2 percent to 15,668.93, on track for a third straight gain and its highest close since March 21. The TSX and the Montreal Exchange shut down all of their markets about two hours early on Friday afternoon after experiencing "internal technical" problems with trading.
