  • Transgender weightlifter Hubbard says injury career-ending

Hubbard left her arrival at the Commonwealth Games to the last minute, arriving after the rest of New Zealand's weightlifting team in order to keep a low profile, refusing any media interviews.

Heading into competition, Samoa's weightlifting head coach Jerry Wallwork made it known that he was totally against Hubbard Hubbard competing at the games.

"She's ultimately satisfied the IOC and the worldwide weightlifting criteria, so at the end of the day she's made her decision and as a nation we've got to be supportive of her".

New Zealander Hubbard, 40, led with a 120kg lift after the snatch discipline but had to withdraw with an elbow injury before the clean and jerk.

"The one saving grace in all of this is that I'm not in any great pain at the moment".

Dignity was present in the way Hubbard addressed the media after her misfortune. "But until we have further scanning we won't know the details".

Feagaiga Stowers took full advantage of Hubbard's misfortune, earning her nation a second gold medal of the day following Sanele Mao's triumph in the men's 105kg.

Australian Weightlifting Federation chief Michael Keelan even tried to have the ruling on Hubbard overturned.

Standing at 185 cm and weighing 130kg, Hubbard was the tallest and heaviest athlete in the field.

I have absolute certainty that Hubbard did not transition simply to win weightlifting medals.

"She just wants to lift".

During the lift, commentators saw her elbow appearing to dislocate under the strain of the bar. It doesn't always go right, doesn't always go to plan.

"I would hope they would support me, but it's not for me to make them do so".

Then, as I put on my hard-bitten sports reporter's trilby, I had to question what seemed like a frightful tactical move that may have played a part in her Games downfall.

Not one of the additional lifters, including Australia's Deb Loveley-Acason, acquired everywhere near Hubbard'therefore indicate.

Just yesterday, New Zealand's high performance director Simon Kent said that "at 40 years of age, this is her last chance to compete on this sort of stage".

"I wanted to give them something that was the best I could do". "But there's no indication at all today that they were anything other than absolutely fantastic, a real credit to the Australian people and also the broader sporting community".

The athlete, who is the top-ranked female weightlifter in the world, became the first trans sportsperson to represent her country.

There was warm applause from the venue's crowd when Hubbard lifted but some spectators said she should not have been allowed to compete as a woman.

"I think you have to be true to yourself and I hope in this case that's what I've done", Hubbard added.

Hubbard's withdrawal paved the way for Stowers to claim the gold with a combined total of 253kg, ahead of Nauruan lifter Charisma Amoe-Tarrant (243) and England's Emily Campbell (242).
