On Thursday morning, the family members allegedly killed the woman by attacking her with a tool used to cut sugarcane plants, Ingle said.

Authorities are investigating whether a surveillance video from Fort Bragg, California, shows one of the women a day before the SUV was found. California Highway Patrol investigators are working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to try to enhance the video.

Authorities have said that data from the vehicle's software suggested the crash was deliberate. The bodies of three of their six adopted kids: Markis, 19; Jeremiah, 14; and Abigail, 14, were located near the crash scene. Hannah, 16, and Sierra, 15, have also not been found.

Searchers looking for the missing Hart siblings found the phone and authorities believe that it could belong to one of the family members, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office told KOIN-TV.

On Wednesday, Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman told HLN's "Crime & Justice with Ashleigh Banfield" that he is "calling it a crime", CBS Portland affiliate KOIN reports.

Data from the vehicle's software air bag module suggests the auto accelerated off the road and no skid marks were spotted in the area, officials said.

Sarah and Jennifer Hart and their six adopted children were believed to be in the family's SUV when it plunged off a cliff last month.

Sarah Hart pleaded guilty in 2011 to a domestic assault charge in Minnesota over what she said was a spanking given to one of her children.

She told police she had spanked the child over the edge of the bathtub because of the child's behavior.

A whopping 80 people continued to search for the three missing children on April 4 - including divers heading near the coastline about 40 miles south from the crash. The couple broke off contact with her after she voiced concerns to them about their treatment of the children, she said.

The agency was trying to get in touch after the "now deceased children were identified as potential victims of alleged abuse or neglect", according to a statement from the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services.
