Uber CEO: We're cooperating with Feds on self-driving auto crash probe

  • During a January 2016 blockade in Paris taxi drivers complained of unfair less-regulated competition from services such as Uber. The EU's top court ruled Tuesday that France can bring criminal charges against Uber for organizing ride networks

Uber Rent powered by Getaround will initially roll out in San Francisco. Getaround operates in 10 United States cities, including San Francisco, Chicago, Washington DC, Boston, and Los Angeles.

But if it can create a useful interface for planning and booking so-called "multi-modal" routes, which combine multiple types of transportation - such as an Uber ride to the nearest commuter rail station - it could be a win-win.

Uber is launching a new auto rental service (right), where users can find a privately owned vehicle and take it out for the day or for a couple hours.

It's part of an aggressive push Uber is making to position itself as a general mobility platform, rather than the simple ride-hailing app that propelled it into a $70 billion commodity. The company announced a slew of new partnerships this week, including ones for an actual car-sharing service, biking, and now more ways to get around cities. By using the Getaround app, people skip the lines and paperwork at traditional rental auto counters, and the hassle of buying and maintaining a vehicle.

Uber Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi said on Wednesday that the ride-sharing company still believes in the prospects for autonomous transport after one of its self-driving vehicles was involved in a fatal crash in Arizona last month. "We share numerous same goals as the 600 cities we serve, and are committed to addressing the same challenges: Reducing individual auto ownership, expanding transportation access and helping governments plan future transportation investments".

Users can "instantly" find privately owned cars that are available for rent in the Uber app, the firm said. "If this goes on, you'll simply have gridlock".

Drivers can also create a profile, which can help riders know more about the driver, including what he does outside of Uber. You'll be able to get an Uber.

Uber: It's not just for cars anymore.

On top of that, Uber users will be able to buy tickets for public transit through the app thanks to a partnership with mobile ticketing service Masabi. The service will also include integration of transit maps and schedule information in select cities. The company did not say which cities.

Electric bicycles, shared or not, already proved to be a great way to reduce traffic clutter and pollution, while reducing time spent commuting, so the next question that comes is whether Uber is considering adding electric scooters or motorcycles to their line-up.

For those familiar with the Transit app, which combines all of the available nearby transit into one convenient dashboard, Uber's suite of announcements Wednesday shows how it essentially aims to become the same one-stop shop.
