Upcoming 6.1 inch cheaper iPhone to lack 3D Touch

  • New screen tech may mean the end of 3D Touch on one of this year's new iPhones

Apple introduced 3D touch with iPhone 6s and while the company marketed it as an innovative product, it was nothing more than a gimmick. However, recently some new details have been reported about the upcoming 6.1-inch iPhone, which shows that it apparently might lack the 3D Touch.

The current rumor is about the 6.1 "version of the iPhone, which will receive an LCD, which will be the cheapest version, which is expected in the autumn together with two OLED models, and there may also be a successor to the iPhone SE; it could be announced in the spring".

In an earlier report we were led to believe the new lower-end iPhone would include 3D Touch, however, it appears this will not be the case due to cost constraints. As per Kuo, the phone will sport a stronger display glass which will not only be lighter but also more robust. Hence, the removal of 3D touch in the 6.1-inch display will offset the cost. Nothing much is known about the sensor other than it adding an extra 15% cost towards the display panel. The company is using LCD screen instead of OLED on the cheapest iPhone and will have Glass cover sensor. This means that the purchase price of the panel will increase from US$ 23 to US$ 26.

However, the mystery behind the thin-film sensor is not revealed in Kuo's note, but it might be some kind of an alternative to the 3D Touch feature. Although Apple's 3D Touch functionality seemed quite elegant, it also had some serious issues. Nevertheless, a small number of 3D Touch users were found to yet swear by the feature, remarking as to how useful it is especially at the time of using the keyboard in iOS that could be pressed to call up a cursor for simpler text editing.

"There are a lot of things that have to fall into place, but 3D Touch overall feels like one of those ideas that only Apple can push into the mainstream - if Samsung or Huawei had delivered a similar feature, it would nearly certainly be a gimmick".
