  • Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz testifies during a Judiciary Committee hearing into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election on Capitol Hill in Washington U.S

"I had a strong impression he conveyed to me, 'It wasn't me, boss, '" Comey told the internal investigators.

In 2015, while McCabe was head of the FBI's Washington Field Office, his wife ran for state senate in Virginia as a Democrat.

She lost the election, but her political affiliation has led conservatives, including Trump, to question her husband's impartiality.

The referral for possible criminal prosecution could have an impact on special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into whether U.S. President Donald Trump tried to obstruct justice by urging Comey to abandon an investigation into his first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, and his contacts with Russians during and after Trump's 2016 campaign. But hopefully, before that happens, McCabe and his legal team will strike back by sharing publicly the sworn testimony and documents that they claim prove Comey's a liar.

Yesterday, Comey appeared on ABC's The View to promote his new book, A Higher Loyalty.

Inspector general investigators came to believe Comey, and they alleged that McCabe lied on three other occasions to them and the FBI's inspection division. "Getting a little (lot) of their own medicine?"

The referral came in "the last few weeks" after the inspector general concluded that McCabe had lied to internal investigators and former FBI Director James ComeyJames Brien ComeyJustice to provide access to Comey memos to GOP lawmakers Judge questions whether DOJ gave Mueller too much power Justice Dept inspector asks U.S. attorney to consider criminal charges for McCabe: reports MORE over his contacts with the media during the 2016 presidential campaign.

McCabe has acknowledging authorizing his general counsel and an official in the FBI's office of public affairs to speak with a Journal reporter for an article about the various investigations into Hillary Clinton. Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired McCabe in March after the FBI's Office of Professional Responsibility recommended his dismissal upon receipt of that report.

Last night, the redacted and declassified sections of Comey's 15 pages of memos were released after the documents were sent to Congress by the Justice Department.

Final week, Justice Division Inspector Basic Michael Horowitz launched a report discovering that McCabe misled Comey and federal investigators about his function in leaking info to the Wall Road Journal in October 2016 concerning the FBI investigation into the Clinton Basis.

The inspector common's report mentioned McCabe licensed Federal Bureau of Investigation officers to share nonpublic info with a reporter after which denied having completed so when questioned about it below oath. McCabe denies that he misled anyone.

McCabe "definitely did not tell me that he authorized" the leak, Comey told OIG investigators, according to the OIG report.

'I don't remember exactly how, but I remember some form or fashion and it could have been like "Can you believe this crap?" If they do, it's possible his former boss, Jim Comey, could be a witness against him in court, David - really ugly stuff. We investigated - I ordered that investigation.

Comey has backed the IG's findings and said Thursday that he "could well be a witness" in a criminal case against McCabe.

"Conflicted. I like him very much as a person but sometimes even good people do things they shouldn't do", he said.

"Potentially. I don't know if the reporting is accurate".
