Why a Billionaire GOP Donor Is Trying to Elect Democrats

  • In the era of Donald Trump, New England's biggest GOP donor is funding Democrats – The Boston Globe

A GOP mega-donor and hedge fund billionaire is fed up with the president and Republicans' inability to get things done despite having control of the Congress and the White House, so he's giving his money to Democrats. That could reflect economic improvement making its way to less-educated, lower-income groups; in a weekly survey by Bloomberg, consumer sentiment was its best in 17 years last week.

Additionally, Klarman has donated roughly $2 million to left-leaning nonprofits organizations pushing gun control, environment protections and other initiatives.

Trump, meanwhile, may be a potential concern for some GOP candidates.

75 percent of potential voters who want new gun laws support Democratic candidates, while 80 percent who prioritize protecting gun rights support Republican candidates.

The poll also found that President Trump has an approval rating of 34 percent in New Jersey. This has happened a couple of times and may be one of the only things that will save the GOP from defeat.

The president remains poorly rated overall in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll -- 56 percent of Americans disapprove of his job performance, versus 40 percent who approve, and "strong" disapprovers outnumber strong approvers by almost 2-1.

Republicans have sought to balance that risk by tying Democratic candidates to Pelosi.

His money has been spread out to Democrats running for 56 House seats and 22 Senate contests, including checks to Chuck Schumer, the highest-ranking Democrat in the Senate, and Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.

This ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by landline and cellular telephone April 8-11, 2018, in English and Spanish, among a random national sample of 1,002 adults and 865 registered voters.

That's a reversal from the merged NBC/WSJ polling data in 2010 - a wave year for Republicans - when 66 percent of Republicans expressed a high level of interest, compared with 49 percent for Democrats.

For this analysis, cleveland.com looked at the raw number of votes for Democrats and Republicans.

Support for the party in the White House almost always drops off during "off-year" elections like this year's, often by several percentage points, a cleveland.com analysis of election results going back to the mid-1970s confirms. See details on the survey's methodology here.
