Woman's shocking discovery about father after Ancestry.com DNA test

  • Woman takes DNA test and discovers fertility doctor used his sperm to impregnate her mum

That was until she learned the same doctor had artificially inseminated her mother with his own sperm and delivered Rowlette-his biological daughter-in May 1981, reports the Daily Beast. According to a lawsuit the family filed in the US District Court of Idaho, she told her parents she was disappointed that the results were so unreliable.

That's when Rowlette took an Ancestry.com DNA test and noticed that her results predicted a parent-child relationship with Mortimer. The service not only connected her genetically to a man she had never heard of, named Gerald Mortimer, it told her that Mortimer was her father.

The complaint alleges Dr Mortimer instead used his own semen, and when Ms Rowlette was conceived, she was Dr Mortimer's biological offspring.

"Dr Mortimer fraudulently and knowingly concealed his use of his own genetic material in the procedure", according to the complaint.

Along with Mortimer, Rowlette is also suing Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates in Idaho Falls, stating the company knew of Mortimer's dirty deeds and did nothing.

Ms Ashby and Mr Fowler sought help from Dr Mortimer in 1979 because they were having trouble conceiving a child.

The lawsuit says they "struggled to cope with their own anguish, and had difficulty contemplating the torment the discovery would cause their daughter when and if she found out". In it, Rowlette accuses Gerald E. Mortimer, a now-retired obstetrician gynecologist in Idaho Falls, of fraud and medical negligence, among other things.

The couple agreed to using donor sperm from a college student. The procedure to inseminate Rowlette's mother was meant to mix 85% of her father's sperm with 15% from a college student of similar appearance.

Ms Roulette was conceived via artificial insemination in the 1980s.

Last year, Rowlette had told her mother about the Ancestry.com test and believed the result was wrong.

The Ancestry.com DNA test provides customers with likely genetic matches for those interested in genealogy.

So far, Mortimer has not commented on the allegations against him, according to the Idaho Statesman.

After Rowlette found out Mortimer was her biological dad - thinking the results were flawed - she broke the news to her now divorced parents.

She is reported to have initially dismissed the Ancestry.com test that determined Mortimer was her father.

"Ms. Ashby contacted Mr. Fowler, now her ex-husband, and relayed the information she obtained from Ancestry.com".

In August, Rowlette was helping to sort through her parents' old papers when she ran across her birth certificate.

Mortimer remained Ashby's doctor for several years until the she and her husband moved to Washington state. "We are committed to delivering the most accurate results, however with this, people may learn of unexpected connections", the statement read.
