Yohan Blake fails to win 100m gold medal at Commonwealth Games

  • Usain Bolt to be in stands for Yohan Blake in CWG 100m final on Monday

Blake, a former World champion, will now take on the likes of South African speedster Akani Simbine who was second in semi-final three in 10.12, and Englishman Adam Gemili who was second in the opening semi in 10.11.

Simbine took a surprise victory in 10.03sec, leading a South African one-two as Henricho Bruintjies took silver in 10.17.

Now it seems even that achievement is up for grabs, as certain images show Blake's foot apparently infringing the boundaries of his lane.

However, images circulated online of the photo-finish that was required to split Blake and Nigerian Seye Ogunlewe (for third and fourth respectively), have stirred up further strife for the Jamaican.

Blake had been the favourite before start of the race, but he was slow out of the blocks as Simbine took advantage.

"I'm a bit disappointed because I've been feeling good, I've been running good and I just didn't put the start together so I was all over the place".

And while the images here aren't entirely conclusive, they are at least close enough to put a serious question mark over the world famous sprinter's head.

The win for Ahye, a finalist at the 2016 Olympics and the last two world championships, delivered Trinidad and Tobago their first Commonwealth title in the women's 100 and meant a Jamaican hasn't won the title since 2006.

It was an easy race for me to win because I've been feeling good. I did not concentrate on what they had been all speaking about. "I was supposed to win easily and I suppose I was too confident and maybe I over-thought it", he said. "I'm looking forward to it", Blake said.

The South Africans topped the podium.

Michelle-Lee Ahye also created history in the women's 100m by winning Trinidad and Tobago's first Commonwealth Games female athletics title. "I will just go back and fix my starts".

The South Africa flag-bearer, who will run in the 800, qualified fastest for Tuesday's final ahead of home runner Georgia Griffith (4:06.41) and Kenya's Mary Kuria.

Sub-10 second times are a rarity on Australian soil but Blake, the third fastest man of all time behind Bolt and Tyson Gay, said he would not rule out anything despite it still being early days in the season.

After crossing the line, the 31-year-old did two push-ups on the track and grinned at the TV camera.

Feagaiga Stowers, second behind Hubbard before her injury, took gold in one of two weightlifting titles for Samoa, who also won the men's 105kg through Sanele Mao.England's James Willstrop beat Paul Coll of New Zealand to win the men's squash, while New Zealander Joelle King was crowned women's champion with victory over English player Sarah-Jane Perry.

Uganda got its first gold medal of the Games when Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei won the 5000m in 13m 50.83s.

"I don't want to say this but it's unfair for her to compete", Samoan official Mary Opeloge said.

And Scottish bowling great Alexander Marshall, a victor at the last four Games, suffered men's pairs defeat alongside Paul Foster to Daniel Salmon and Marc Wyatt of Wales.
