Cannes 2018: It's not the Nobel Peace Prize, it's Palme d'Or

  • Cannes: 'Don Quixote' Decision Coming Wednesday; Fest Chief On Women's Red Carpet Event & More

One hundred women will walk the Cannes Film Festival red carpet in a mark of solidarity.

After arriving at Nice airport on Monday 7 May, they made their way to Cannes, before heading for a Cannes jury dinner at Hotel Martinez.

Indeed, in addition to Stewart and Seydoux, the jury this year is rounded out by Ava DuVernay, Taiwanese actor Chang Chen, French director Robert Guédiguian, Burundian singer-songwriter Khadja Nin, Canadian director Denis Villeneuve, and _Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev.

The affair has prompted the film festival to set up an anti-sexual harassment hotline this year.

France's Gender Equality Minister Marlene Schiappa confirmed the news, explaining everyone has been warmed to watch their behaviour at the festival, taking place from 8 May to 19 May.

Another change implemented this year is that critics will no longer be seeing films before they premiere, but now at the same time, as a way for organisers to try minimise what they see as the negative impact social media can have on the buzz of a film at Cannes.

Weinstein Harvey's scandal was brought into limelight after four actresses accused him of sexual assault.

"Black Panther" director Ryan Coogler - whose film is breaking box office records - is also likely to tackle the lack of black faces in Hollywood in a Cannes masterclass.

"This is recognition for my work as a filmmaker, not for my work as a female filmmaker", says Labaki. "Not specifically. There are several women in competition but they are not there because of their gender, they are there for the quality of their work". Would I like to see more women in competition?

The trailblazing director, screenwriter, producer and distributor, who directed the Oscar-nominated civil rights drama "Selma", is the first African-American woman to helm a film with a budget over $100 million - this year's "A Wrinkle In Time" starring Reese Witherspoon and Oprah Winfrey. Absolutely. Do I expect and hope that is going to happen in the future?

"It will be a march dedicated to the women of cinema", Cannes director Thierry Fremaux told a press conference in the French Riviera resort ahead of Tuesday's festival launch.

Stewart said she hoped to be "fundamentally moved" by the films in competition and that the eventual recipient of the Palme d'Or would "still stand up in 10 years' time".

The festival this year even altered its sacred schedule to eliminate morning press screenings ahead of premieres - a strategic switch meant to blunt the effect of press-corps boos marring film premieres, a practice that had emerged as a kind of blood sport at Cannes.

That change is clearly being seen and felt across the festival this year. There was something outside of my purview to orient me to my place in the world. The Han Solo spinoff "Solo: A Star Wars Story" is set for an worldwide premiere on May 15.

Cannes never mentions the country of origin while listing the films. I'm not looking at the filmmakers as an Iranian filmmaker, or a Chilean, or a Korean, or a female, or a transgender [filmmaker]-'We don't have any transgender directors this year.
