Subtropical Storm Alberto has formed over the northwestern Caribbean Sea, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center said Friday.

On its current forecast track, Alberto is expected to continue its slow journey north through the weekend until making a turn to the northwest Monday as it approaches the north-central Gulf coast, the hurricane center said.

Even though June 1 is generally the start of hurricane season, early storms are not uncommon.

However, once Alberto gets into the Gulf, computer models suggest it strengthening into a stronger storm as it enters a more favorable environment.

Each list has 21 names, leaving out Q, U, X, Y and Z. If there are more than 21 named storms, the rest will be indicated by Greek letters. These rains could produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.

"Its mostly looking like a heavy rain event", National Weather Service meteorologist John McMichael said.

The National Hurricane Center predicts that Alberto could have sustained winds of 65 miles per hour - not far from hurricane-force - by Monday when it is approaching the coast near Mobile, Ala., and Biloxi, Miss.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain to the Yucatan Peninsula, western Cuba, Florida and the northeastern Gulf Coast throughout the weekend. Heavy rains were expected in western Cuba, Florida and the northern Gulf Coast into next week.

Forecasters expect Suptropical Storm Alberto to move into the Gulf and toward the Gulf Coast this weekend. Subtropical storms show some, but not all, of the characteristics of a tropical storm.

The South Florida Water Management District said they have prepared their massive flood control system to protect residents over the next five to seven days. It became a tropical storm that meandered off the cast coast of Georgia and SC.

The Weather Prediction Center has South Florida rain totals at above 6 inches over the next seven days. Isolated tornadoes are possible.

Severe storms on Thursday raged from Minnesota to Georgia, creating flooding and damaging trees and homes.
