Gareth Southgate names England squad for World Cup in Russian Federation

  • England World Cup squad one to get excited about – Gareth Southgate

This became particularly apparent when the Three Lions' 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup was announced on Wednesday.

Liverpool teenager Trent Alexander-Arnold has continued a dream breakthrough season with a maiden global call-up ahead of next weekend's Champions League final against Real Madrid.

Defender Gary Cahill has been recalled and there are also places on the plane to Russian Federation for Chelsea team-mate Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope.

There is a distinct lack of creativity in England's midfield after Southgate chose to overlook Jack Wilshere and Jonjo Shelvey too.

On Wednesday, Southgate unveiled the 23-man squad he will take to Russian Federation this summer - and now thoughts turn to how England could line up for their opening game against Tunisia on 18 June.

"It is a young group but with some really important senior players, so I feel the balance of the squad is good, both in terms of its experience, its character and also the positional balance". Harry Kane, Sterling, Rashford, Welbeck and Vardy will be competing for spots to lead the English forward line.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is 19, still lives with his mother, and was playing in Liverpool's reserve team this time past year.

"We have a lot of energy and athleticism in the team", Southgate said, "but players that are equally comfortable in possession of the ball and I think people can see the style of play we've been looking to develop".

"The first call-up for Trent Alexander-Arnold is well deserved", Southgate said.

As for Southgate's central midfielders, he's got Dele Alii, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Eric Dier and Fabian Delph, again, snubbing Newcastle's Shelvey.

CHERRIES star Lewis Cook's World Cup dream is still alive after he was put on standby for next month's finals in Russian Federation.

Today, Gareth Southgate named Rashford as one of the four strikers he'll bring to Russian Federation in June.

"The selection process has been over months really, it's not just been the last few weeks".

"It wasn't an enjoyable part of the job and I feel it's important to acknowledge their contribution in getting us to Russian Federation".

Southgate does not have to formally submit his squad list to Federation Internationale de Football Association until June 4.

Unlike his sidelined Liverpool colleagues Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gomez, Adam Lallana has returned to action following an injury-plagued season but the playmaker must be content with a place on the five-man standby list alongside Tom Heaton, James Tarkowski, Jake Livermore and Lewis Cook.

England will play two matches before travelling to Russian Federation on June 2 against Nigeria at Wembley and on June 7 against Costa Rica at Elland Road.
