Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen told colleagues she almost resigned after President Donald Trump berated her Wednesday at a Cabinet meeting for not adequately securing the nation's borders, The New York Times reported Thursday.

As a group of Central American migrants seeking asylum in the US approached the border in recent weeks, Trump directed Nielsen not to let the so-called "caravan" into the country.

The president's eruption was witnessed by Cabinet members plus a number of senior White House officials - including counselor Kellyanne Conway, advisers Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, immigration adviser Stephen Miller and chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesman poured cold water on a report claiming its chief nearly resigned after an angry outburst by President Trump.

"You can't allow people to pour into our country like they're doing", Trump said.

One person close to Nielsen told the Times she is "miserable in her job".

Trump's outburst was not only aimed at Nielsen, according to the Times, but the entire cabinet for not making enough progress in stopping illegal immigration and ensuring border security.

The exchange was so hostile, according to The New York Times, that Nielsen later informed colleagues that she planned to leave the administration and drafted a resignation letter, though she did not submit it.

"The @nytimes article alleging that the Secretary drafted a resignation letter yesterday and was close to resigning is false", tweeted Homeland Security spokesman Tyler Houlton. "I wouldn't put it quite that way", he said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose private conversations.

Also, does anybody else miss the days when White House reporters could go years at a time without having to use the word tirade to describe Cabinet meetings? "Another person said the president was primarily focused on the homeland security department because he views Ms. Nielsen as primarily responsible for keeping illegal immigrants out of the country".

During his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump fervently pushed for immigration reform by outlining bold plans, including the construction of a massive wall stretching across the US-Mexico border.

Trump has also been frustrated with Congress's refusal to fully fund his promised border wall along the nation's southern border, and some in the administration had accused DHS leaders of slow-walking more aggressive efforts to separate children from their parents at the border.

Trump is now frustrated lately on growing numbers of illegal border crossings right after a drop throughout his first 12 months in office, " the Times explained, citing several officers.
