As per the media reports, as many as 3,000 protesters gathered at the main gate, Baab-e-Sayyad, of AMU, seeking a judicial inquiry against Hindu groups who barged into the campus and clashed with the students on Wednesday.

The demands included that the portraits of the founder of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, be "prohibited from display in the country" and that a case be lodged for sedition against those supporting Jinnah. Representatives of the AMU student union said they had met Vice Chancellor Tariq Mansoor and urged him to formally take up their demands.

Wading into the controversy over the presence of Pakistan's founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah's portrait in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Union Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh said that Muslims who support the idea of having Jinnah's portrait in AMU are insulting their forefathers. Section 144 was also imposed in the district to maintain peace and prevent "rumour mongering".

Speaking to ANI, Trivedi castigated sympathisers of Jinnah, who was responsible for country's partition.

The internet services in Aligarh will remain suspended till 12:00 am (06 May 2018).

"We strongly and unequivocally condemn the biased attitude of the police force, the supposed to be protectors of the society and demand immediate action according to the law of the land against the perpetrators/ conspirators of this unfortunate and unwarranted incident", he added.

The Jinnah row started after BJP's Aligarh lawmaker Satish Gautam wrote to AMU raising objections to the portrait. On Thursday, chief minister Yogi Adityanath also called for the removal of Jinnah's portrait.

The AMU students also clashed with the police, resulting in 28 students and 13 policemen sustaining injuries. They said members of certain outfits entered the campus and disrupted the peaceful academic environment there.

In the letter, the BJP leader said that he wanted to know under what circumstances the portrait of Jinnah was still placed in the university.
