  • Infrared images reveal damage on Hawaii's Big Island

The continuous flow of lava and the fissures that are erupting from the Kilauea volcano were captured in the latest aerial shots by the Hawaii Army National Guard.

Volcanic gases and vog emissions may increase in areas downwind of the Lower East Rift Zone lava vents.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported this morning that a new fissure 24 opened.

The ongoing eruption, which has produced rivers of lava, is also threatening to cover more wells at a geothermal power station.

Lava from the Kilauea volcano has halted after reaching a geothermal power plant on the Big Island on Sunday, approaching wells that have been capped to protect against the release of toxic gas should they mix with lava.

At least 82 homes have been completely destroyed since the first eruption over a month ago, forcing more than 2000 people to flee the area.

On Friday afternoon, firefighters went door to door in Leilani Estates urging resident to leave as the lava advanced toward the neighborhood.

"Residents downslope of the region of fissures should heed all Hawaii County Civil Defense messages and warnings", it said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said sulfur dioxide emissions from the volcano have more than doubled since the current eruption began.

"I never got to. walk in my house one last time", she said, on her family's GoFundMe page, which had been started to help offset evacuation costs.

"What has been coming out is just a small fraction of what was in the volcano", he said.

"From one second to the next, no transition", she said.

Scientists say explosive eruptions are occurring daily and lava is flowing from several cracks in the ground.

Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens subdivisions - home to about 2,000 - have been under mandatory evacuation orders since May 3.

NASA has released a new animated image that show Kilauea's lava flows at night. But no hydrogen sulfide had been detected.
