Korea talks will take place

The US secretary of state told the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee that he was "hopeful" that the meeting would go ahead. Lawmakers' questioning of Pompeo followed Trump's comment Tuesday that "there's a very substantial chance" the meeting would not proceed as scheduled.

White House aides are preparing to travel to Singapore this weekend for a crucial meeting with North Korean officials to discuss the agenda and logistics for the summit, United States officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Singapore's United Nations ambassador, Burhan Gafoor, asked the Security Council committee monitoring sanctions against North Korea for a sanctions exemption for the delegation to attend the scheduled June 12 meeting as well as for "preparatory work for the summit". He says preparations continue for a planned June 12 summit in Singapore between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

North Korea had earlier refused to grant entry visas to the South Korean journalists after the North cut off high-level contact with Seoul to protest joint U.S. Even so, it is not an irreversible move and would need to be followed by many more significant measures to meet Trump's demands for real denuclearization.

But there has been increasing pessimism about the meeting after North Korea scrapped the inter-Korean talks and threatened to do the same for the Kim-Trump summit in protest of the South Korea-U.S. military drills and what it calls Washington's push for "one-sided" disarmament. Libya's longtime autocratic leader Moammar Gadhafi was killed several years later after a Western-backed military intervention.

The creator of the Rogers International Commodities Index (RICI) said he's been to North Korea twice, seeking investments but the USA government is holding him back, Fox Business Network explained.

But Pompeo said he could not answer directly when asked in the hearing if North Korea would be able to maintain a civilian nuclear program.

"When we get there, in exchange for that, we're prepared to do a great deal to help the North Korean people". On Wednesday it was escorting a group of global reporters, including an Associated Press Television crew, to witness the closure of its atomic test site.

"The kid has been trying to make a deal with America for three years".

The North's decision to close the Punggye-ri nuclear test site has generally been seen as a welcome gesture by Kim to set a positive tone ahead of the summit.

"We will know next week about Singapore", he told reporters at the White House before leaving for NY, the day after acknowledging that there's a "very substantial chance" the summit will be canceled.

Pompeo said Kim "asked for the meeting, the president agreed to meet with him". But there also is the risk of a diplomatic failure that would allow the North to revive and advance its nuclear weapons program. He said they had discussed their mutual goals for the talks.
