Laurel or Yanny? This is the new dress debate

Do you hear what I hear?

It's the debate now dividing the internet, offices and even some friendship groups: When you listen to this piece of audio, do you hear "Yanny" or "Laurel"? The recording, which is in English, now seems to only say "laurel", and we we can't hear "yanny" anymore. Some of your friends saw a white and gold dress (umm, what?) while you saw blue and black. "Both sides have a very good point".

Is there social media commentary about this? "What gets people confused is that it's not Yanny or Laurel, it's more of a YAREL thing", he said.

While some can rest on their "laurels", many have sparked a debate about how two people can hear different names. The two younger members of Select All heard "Yanny", while the older two heard "Laurel".

In a freakish clip posted to Twitter, a spoken word plays on repeat and apparently not everyone can agree on what that word is.

Workplaces everywhere ground to a halt as everybody argued whether the robot in this recording says "Yanny" or "Laurel".

Speaking to the Verge, Mr Riecke suggests the "secret is frequency? but some of it is also the mechanics of your ears, and what you're expecting to hear".

If you want to know what is causing this incredible rift (and some actually hear both at the same time), some internet wizards have solved the mystery.

If the odd, robotic voice was saying names of Quebec births, it would nearly certainly be saying "Laurel".
