  • Lewis Hamilton says F1 Monaco Grand Prix needs to be fixed

Red Bull Racing star Daniel Ricciardo claimed a dominant victory in the Monaco Grand Prix - despite suffering from a powertrain problem for the bulk of the race.

After guzzling champagne from his sweaty shoe - as he likes to do - it was time to cool off. "I have done everything I can so let's finish the job".

Ricciardo's advantage was slightly narrower than practice lap times had suggested, though, with Sebastian Vettel less than a quarter of a second adrift in second.

"It was two years in the making and I really feel that redemption has arrived", Ricciardo said after taking the checkered flag.

"They could win many more races and he just has to keep his head down and keep doing what he's doing and he should have his options ready".

Ricciardo is now earning significantly less than Verstappen on STG12 million a season but would surely demand as much, if not more than his under-performing team-mate to stay with Red Bull. Hamilton was struggling with excessive tyre wear. Monégasque Charles Leclerc suffered from a brake failure that saw him plunge into the back of Toro Rosso's Brendon Hartley (who desperately needs some luck!). Drivers are not allowed to overtake when the VSC is deployed and must maintain a steady speed. Kimi Raikkonen, who took pole position past year, had to settle for fourth place, just 0.034s off Hamilton and 0.175s clear of the second Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas.

It was overall a decent day for Red Bull, too, thanks to Max Verstappen coming from last on the grid to seal ninth while Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly impressed to seal sixth and seventh, respectively.

But Ricciardo's form, coupled with the 20-year-old Verstappen's error-prone campaign, has seen him emerge as the team's No.1 contender.

Red Bull had an interesting start to the 2018 Monaco GP with one auto at the pole and one starting all the way at the back.

He drove like a man on a mission. I think Daniel had the answers at all times.

His team principal Christian Horner, who rushed over to hug him, was in awe. Drivers calling in to say how slow the pace was, shortly followed by Force India drivers lifting off the throttle of their Mercedes-engined cars to give way to a recently pitted works Mercedes auto, for position.

Meanwhile, Red Bull boss Christian Horner is hopeful the current strength of the vehicle will entice Ricciardo into staying put. "You can hear his composure in the auto ... there is no panic".

"Will it get better", a desperate Ricciardo asked over the team radio.

Vettel reduced Hamilton's championship lead from 17 points to 14 in an intriguing championship tussle. While the Hyper was mighty in qualifying to generate a sub-71 second lap on the two mile series of corners, none of the compounds turned into a proper race tyre.

Montreal's Lance Stroll finished 17th, two laps back.
