MSU Reaches $500M Settlement With Larry Nassar Victims

17 May, 2018, 01:46 | Author: Hannah Francis
  • Larry Nassar Survivors and Michigan State University announce they have successfully resolved existing litigation and agreed in principle to a $500 million global settlement

The statement did not indicate how much money each victim would receive.

In January, more than 150 women testified at trial about Nassar's pattern of sexual abuse. They said the sports doctor molested them while they sought treatment for injuries. The remaining $75 million will be held in reserve in the event future lawsuits are filed against the university over Nassar.

"We are truly sorry to all the survivors and their families for what they have been through, and we admire the courage it has taken to tell their stories", said Brian Breslin, chairman of Michigan State's governing board. The complaint is related to a pending criminal case against Strampel, who is accused of failing to properly supervise Nassar and of his own sexual misconduct involving students. The suits alleged that MSU, USA Gymnastics and others failed to protect the victims from sexual abuse by Nassar.

During its 2016-2017 school year, MSU raked in $859 million in tuition, comprising 29% share of its total revenue, according to its annual financial statement. "It is the honest hope of all of the survivors that the legacy of this settlement will be far reaching institutional reform that will end the threat of sexual assault in sports, schools and throughout our society".

Rachael Denhollander, the first to publicly accuse Nassar, said she was grateful for the settlement. A successful resolution to the litigation is a positive step in moving us all forward. "However, I am deeply disappointed at the missed opportunity for meaningful reform and change at the University".

Over 300 victims have sued the school over sexual abuse at the hands of Nassar.

MSU said the university's Board of Trustees approved the settlement during a conference call Tuesday night.

The settlement ends civil legal proceedings that started over a year ago against Nassar, when multiple women and girls said he sexually assaulted them.

Nassar is now being held in federal jail and will likely remain there for the rest of his life.

Attorneys representing 332 survivors of former Michigan State University doctor Larry Nassar in lawsuits against Michigan State University and attorneys for the university announced a global settlement in principle totaling $500 million dollars.

The deal applies only to Michigan State.

Nassar pleaded responsible to assaulting victims along with his palms below the guise of therapy.

He is serving a 60-year sentence for child pornography.

He treated campus athletes and scores of young gymnasts at his Michigan State office.

Olympic gold medal winners Aly Raisman, Jordyn Wieber, McKayla Maroney, and Gabby Douglas are among his accusers, per NBC.
