  • Liberia Turns Towards Normalcy As Fight Continues To Eradicate Ebola

The Government has said there has been no case of Ebola reported in Kenya despite a recent outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

However, research by Kent University suggests a drive to vaccinate the entire population wouldn't be an effective way of stopping the disease spread.

Following what, World Health Organization put neighbouring countries including South Sudan on high alert saying it is preparing for the "worst case scenario".

This Ebola outbreak is the DRC's 9th known outbreak since 1976, reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Six months after an Ebola outbreak was confirmed in West Africa in March 2014, the World Health Organization declared an worldwide emergency and called for help.

The incident in the town of Bikoro comes more than a year after an outbreak in the country killed four people. But before the vaccine could be rolled out, the virus was stopped by methods used in earlier outbreaks - health workers in protective gear isolating the sick and burying the dead.

The outbreak was declared on Tuesday (May 8), after lab tests revealed two confirmed cases of the virus.

Ebola is spread through person-to-person contact with the blood, or other bodily fluids, of an infected person.

But, now health officials have revealed the first death since the latest outbreak, with another 17 suspected cases currently being treated.

That outbreak killed more than 11,300 people out of almost 29,000 registered cases, according to World Health Organization estimates.

World Health Organisation officials are preparing for the "worst case scenario", in other words, an epidemic or continent-wide pandemic.

WHO has provided technical and operations support to the Ministry of Health and Partners in the activation of multi-partner multi-agency Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate the response at all levels. The virus has a 50 percent survival rate. The patients presented with fever, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, myalgia and arthralgia, and some also showed haemorrhagic signs and symptoms.

When the Ebola virus swept through West Africa in 2014, it hit capital cities so quickly that medical professionals were left with few options to prevent its spread. In addition to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, past Ebola outbreaks have occurred in Gabon, South Sudan, Ivory Coast, Uganda, Republic of Congo and South Africa.

Unless remediated immediately, the number of deaths for this outbreak could increase.

Pierre Formenty, DVM, MPH, a WHO Ebola expert, told reporters that investigators already know funeral transmission has been an issue in the current outbreak and that anthropology experts, who help navigate cultural issues in outbreak settings, are among the first wave of the surge of WHO experts responding.
