North Carolina: Teachers 'Raleigh' for Salary Increase

  • More than 10,000 teachers rallied on Halifax Mall Wednesday led by the N.C. Association of Teachers

The state's main teacher advocacy group, the North Carolina Association of Educators, demands that legislators increase per-pupil spending to the national average in four years, increase school construction for a growing state, and approve a multiyear pay raise for teachers and school support staff that would raise incomes to the national average.

Today, on May 16, 2018, the North Carolina General Assembly will be met with thousands of teachers from across the state that have joined together in a movement now known as the "Rally for Respect".

The rally in Raleigh is just the latest in a wave of teacher uprisings this year. We've done these things over and over and over again.

All the teachers were dressed in red T-shirts that had different messages but encompassed one unifying message: uniting for teacher's rights.

With the large number of teacher absences Wednesday, 12 school districts in the WBTV viewing area designated May 16 an optional teacher workday.

North Carolina's education funding and teacher salaries are much-debated topics each year, especially how they compare with other states.

"The numbers speak for themselves - and we're glad to have the opportunity to share North Carolina's success story and set the record straight", they said in a statement. North Carolina state representative Mark Brody (R) posted on Facebook that teachers "choose to inconvenience" parents by rallying. Better pay is one of the teachers' demands, but it's hardly their only focal point.

Butler had a sign outside her door welcoming teachers. I'd give them money to protest.

"That teachers' salaries are 37th in the nation; that's not good enough", he said. "I feel like this is something that I'm becoming more passionate about, because I'm realizing the impact that it has".

Almost all public school teachers report digging into their pockets to pay for school supplies, spending almost $480 a year, far more than the federal $250 tax deduction available to teachers, according to the National Center of Education Statistics. Almost 7,500 teachers' assistant positions have been cut in the last decade, participants argue, and nearly a quarter of the state's kids live in poverty.

"It's the beginning of a six-month stretch of time to hold our legislators accountable for prioritizing corporate tax cuts instead of our classrooms", according to the North Carolina Association of Educators.

An energetic and vocal crowd gathered along South Street near the NCAE headquarters and marched through downtown toward the state legislative building. The legislature also phased out the state's estate tax. The average teacher salary this year is estimated at $50,861, almost $10,000 lower than the national average. "This has gone on long enough that people are either ready to quit and leave the profession or they're ready to fight", he said. "We vote!" and "This is What Democracy Looks Like!" "I don't think they ever thought that we would unite like this and get schools closed across the state [to] be here". The teachers have taken cues from the West Virginia, Oklahoma and Arizona strikes. This year, she become the local organization's vice president.

"We've heard people like Gov. (Roy) Cooper push for a return to the same failed approach that required the furloughing of teachers and the freezing of their salaries by Democrats when they were last in control", said Berger Tuesday in a press conference ahead of the rally.

"I think this will represent a power shift in our state", Kelly told Teen Vogue. We've gone in and we've done our jobs.

"I think a lot about the Arab spring and I think a lot about Occupy and how you move from this inspiring moment to enduring change", she said.
