North Korea urges South to stop military drills with US

  • South Korea says military drills will go on

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in met on April 27 for a historic summit at Panmunjom and issued a joint declaration calling for improving inter-Korean relations and working for complete denuclearisation of the peninsula.

Gaddafi was deposed and killed after Libyans joined the 2011 Arab Spring protests, aided by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies who had encouraged him to give up his banned weapons of mass destruction under a 2003 deal. "His country would be very rich", he said.

"He [Mr Kim] would be there, he would be running his country".

"North Korea is actually talking to us about times and everything else as though nothing happened", he said.

Cancellation of the summit, the first meeting between a serving U.S. president and a North Korean leader, would deal a major blow to what would be the biggest diplomatic achievement of Mr Trump's presidency.

Though the USA strikes were effective, they were focused and did not "decimate" the country in the way that, say, U.S. bombers pounded North Korea in the Korean War.

A model involving national devastation for the country "would take place if we don't make a deal, most likely", Trump said.

Mr Trump said the Libya model would only come into play if a deal could not be reached with North Korea.

Mr Trump has raised expectations for success even as many analysts have been sceptical about the chances of bridging the gap because of questions about North Korea's willingness to give up a nuclear arsenal that it says can hit the US.

So far, 2018 has been nearly clear of nuclear brinkmanship between Trump and Kim, but Thursday should remind us that as long as North Korea has nuclear weapons, the United States stands a hair's breadth from war.

North Korea had said it would not return to talks with South Korea due to the exercises.

The current uncertainty comes at a time when Trump's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal has drawn criticism internationally and moving the United States embassy in Israel to Jerusalem has fuelled deadly violence on the Israel-Gaza border.

Pyongyang suspended inter-Korean talks on Wednesday to protest a two-week-long large-scale US-South Korean air drill which will last until May 25. But as Trump's comments on Thursday show, despite the hand-holding and peace talks, nearly nothing has changed in North Korea, or with Trump.

In an interview with the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) he said that "it will be hard to sit down face-to-face with representatives of the South Korean regime" until the settlement of the situation that led to the suspension of high-level inter-Korean talks.
