Thursday, 17, may, Sochi hosted a meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad, said the press service of the Russian AP.

A transcript of the meeting released by the Kremlin quoted Assad as saying that Syria is making progress in fighting "terrorism", which "opens the door to the political process".

"Of course, after this military success, additional conditions have been created to restart a full-format political process", he said at talks with Assad on Thursday.

This time, the Russian President (known for excellent German skills) and the German Chancellor (a fluent Russian speaker) are set to meet face-to-face in the resort city of Sochi. The fallout over the Iran deal is a rare topic for rapprochement between Europe and Moscow, whose relations are marred by disagreements over the Syria conflict, Moscow's 2014 annexation of Crimea and the subsequent war in eastern Ukraine.

Putin hailed the Syrian army's victories over militants in Syria, stressing that Syrian soldiers have achieved significant progress recently in boosting the legitimate authority of the Syrian regime. Its military support not only ensured the survival of Mr Assad's regime, it changed the course of the war.

"The next task, of course, is the economic recovery and humanitarian aid for those people in a hard situation", Putin added. They will be sent to the United Nations, it is on the basis of the Geneva process. "However, we will continue to move steadily toward the peace process and for the sake of peace", Assad stressed.

Russian television broadcast short clips from the two men's discussion. He thanked the Russian military for playing an important role in the fight.

"The talks were quite detailed", Peskov said.

Syria's conflict began with mass protests against the Assad family's decades-long rule.
