  • BSF jawan attains martyrdom in Pak firing on IB in Samba

Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked and indiscriminate firing on forward posts in the Manguchak area around 11.30 pm on Monday night and was effectively retaliated by the jawans guarding the IB, the officer said seeking anonymity. But after some time their movement was noticed again. "We will track and neutralise them soon", said KK Sharma, Director General (DG) of BSF.

The killed soldier was identified as constable Devendra Singh. There is a possibility that a group of five (terrorists) managed to sneak into this side through a tunnel on Sunday night. We are trying to locate the tunnel.

The men were seen at the border yesterday but they went missing, BSF sources say. "The anti-tunneling exercise is going on", he said.

Last month, Pakistan-based Dawn reported that the country is now planning an ambitious space programme during the next fiscal year (2018-19) at a cost of Rs 4.7 billion in a possible bid to "keep an eye on the Indian side". Army helicopters are carrying out search operations in the area.

The BSF jawan's death took the number of persons killed in over 700 incidents of Pakistani shelling along the IB and Line of Control (LoC) in the state to 33. The crossfire incidents along the IB over the past three months have reduced considerably after the intense border confrontations in January and February, which led to many casualties.

"Pakistan is our hostile neighbour and tries to push terrorists and violates ceasefire regularly".
