Donald Trump has tweeted to say that the five most wanted leaders of ISIS have been captured.

The men have since appeared on Iraqi television in yellow prison uniforms; with officials describing them as "some of the most wanted" leaders of the terrorist group. Trump wrote in a post on Twitter, providing no further details.

The paper reports that the operation began after Turkish authorities arrested a top aide to ISIS chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in February and extradited him to Iraq.

The second leader, Ismail al-Eithawi, who had been captured previously, was said to have been told to use his phone to summon the others.

He thought to be hiding in eastern Syria and surrounded by only a small group of trusted followers, an Iraqi intelligence official said. The capture of all five was announced on Iraqi state TV on Wednesday.

Dillon's tweet said the capture was a coordinated operation between Iraqi and the USA backed Syrian Democratic Forces.

His tweet came after Iraqi officials confirmed the results of the three-month cross-border operation.

Last year, the Pentagon said that there were "some indicators" that al-Baghdadi was still alive a month after Russian Federation claimed to have killed him in a strike near the Syrian city of Raqqa.

On April 30, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi pledged to continue airstrikes on Daesh positions and headquarters inside neighboring Syria but stressed that Baghdad would not infringe upon the sovereignty of the Damascus government. The Iraqi air force has carried out several air strikes since past year against Islamic State positions in Syrian territory. But the militants still pose a threat along the border with Syria and have continued to carry out ambushes, killings and bombings across Iraq.

The militant group swept into Iraq in the summer of 2014, taking control of almost a third of the country.
