The Associated Press reports the release of Holt and his wife, Thamara Caleno, and their departure for Washington came one day after an influential USA senator held a surprise meeting in Caracas with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who the Trump administration says runs a "dictatorship" and just won re-election in a "sham" vote.

He was commenting after Holt, 26, and his wife Thamara Caleno, landed in Washington after Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro ordered their release after two years.

Twenty-six-year-old Joshua Holt and his wife arrived Saturday evening at Washington Dulles International Airport.

President Donald Trump says in a tweet that he expects to greet Holt at the White House later Saturday. "We extend our special thanks to Senator Bob Corker, Senator Orrin Hatch, Senator Mike Lee, Representative Mia Love, and all the other members of Congress who have worked on behalf of the Holt family over the past two years and helped to make this day a reality", he said.

The president met with Josh Holt Saturday at the White House, just moments after he touched down on US soil with his wife.

Trump responded by calling Holt fearless.

A day after Maduro's swearing-in, the USA prohibited purchases of debt owed to the Venezuelan government, including to its state-run oil company. A few hours later President Donald Trump welcomed them to the White House.

"You understood that beautifully", Trump said to Holt's Venezuelan daughter.

The Venezuelan government said Holt and his wife were freed in a goodwill gesture to the USA, a measure that surprised some knowing the combative history between the two nations. Trump said Holt's case had proved hard and lawmakers, along with members of the State Department, had been working tirelessly to have him released. In this photo released by the Miraflores Presidential Press Office, Venezuela'. In one video he said, "I've been begging my government for two years".

Trump, in a tweet, described Holt as a "hostage".

Holt's family says "we are grateful to all who participated in this miracle".

Shortly after McCarry's visit, Lacava traveled to Washington in March to speak with several lawmakers including Hatch, Corker, Sen.

Nine months into his incarceration, NPR reported the US embassy in Venezuela had "raised concerns" about Holt's well-being and his treatment by Venezuelan authorities.

On May 17, Holt issued a plea on Facebook, asking the U.S. government to help him return home. "When you look back on your tenure during the presidency, this is just one of many great things you're doing, but it's really a great thing".

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said this month that a senior department official had urged Holt's release on humanitarian grounds.

Last week, the United States government denounced as a "sham" Maduro's recent victory in elections, in which he secured six more years in office.

Holt and his wife were being held at a prison in Caracas known as the Helicoide where the Sebin keeps political prisoners.
