United Nations chief to meet Trump after USA nuclear deal exit

  • President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are planning the first face-to-face North Korea-U.S. summit since the end of the Korean War in 1953

South and North Koreas are in close and continuous dialogue, an official from Seoul's presidential office Cheong Wa Dae confirmed Tuesday, apparently to fine-tune their methods of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula ahead of a historic US-North Korea summit.

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that three Americans detained by North Korea are on their way home with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. After decades of hostility and threats of nuclear attacks, these new developments between US, North Korea and South Korea are groundbreaking, and hint at finally achieving some hope of reconciliation in the Korean peninsula, after almost seventy years of enmity. "But wouldn't it be easier for them to refuel somewhere else?" the official added, declining to clarify whether Abe is instead planning to travel to Singapore himself and have post-summit talks with Trump there.

White House national security adviser John Bolton said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union" that North Korea's prospects are "unbelievably strong if they'll commit to denuclearization". "Very exciting!" he wrote on Twitter.

Daniel Russel served as the assistant secretary of state for East Asia and Pacific from 2013 to 2017, which means that for four years he was the top US diplomat for Asia under the Obama administration. But fundamentally it would mean accepting North Korea as a nuclear power. "The American leadership under President Trump has its eyes wide open". But just because President Trump appears ready to accede to what the North Koreans have always wanted doesn't mean we should harbor unrealistic ideas about what is possible.

The North has claimed that its nuclear arsenal is for defensive purposes and to counter any US plans at regime change, but Kim said last month that his country was shifting to a "new strategic line" that focuses the nation's resources on rebuilding its economy.

"We will have to provide security assurances to be sure". He claims to have shut down a nuclear research facility that already was on its last legs. "They are in great need of agricultural equipment and technology", he said on CBS' "Face the Nation". Pompeo praised it as "one step along the way". I think we need to look at their chemical and biological weapons programs as well.

Russel also said that Kim Jong-Un is unlikely to put any trust in US promises in a negotiation in the first place, even before Trump's withdrawal from the Iran deal.
