Those given approval Tuesday to test delivery drones under the "Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Pilot program" include a range of Universities and government departments from the inner 48 through to the University of Alaska at Fairbanks as well.

"The UAS Integration Pilot Program will help tackle the most significant challenges to integrating drones into the national airspace and will reduce risks to public safety and security", the Transportation Department said in a statement.

Flying taxis are the most high profile of the current drone development projects, with Google co-founder Larry Page's Kitty Hawk unveiling its designs in March and Uber holding a conference for its Elevate programme this week.

In Apple's case, it will be able to ignore usual drone flight limitations permitted by the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), such as flying drones at night and going beyond an operator's line of sight. It began limited drone deliveries in the United Kingdom in 2016.

The city will work withFlirtey, one of the few drone companies that has carried out officially sanctioned unmanned drone tests in the U.S., to test delivering medical equipment, such as defibrillators.

On Wednesday, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao announced that 10 local, state and tribal governments will work with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and companies in the private sector to further integrate drones into their operations.

One of these will be in Reno, Nevada, to develop a delivery system for life-saving medical equipment such as medical defibrillators in emergency situations in both urban and rural environments.

The use of drones for delivery and other services came a step closer on Wednesday, May 9 with the announcement of 10 major projects across the country.

Cupertino was among a handful of companies seeking permission to carry out experimental drone flights beyond the limits now enforced by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Now, Apple has officially commented on these plans...

Winners include projects focused on package delivery, environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, pipeline oversight and integrating drones near airports, the USA official said.

The US Department of Transportation and the FAA will use the collected data to help craft new rules that expand the use cases for low-altitude operations and accelerate the approval of operations that now require special authorizations. FedEx is based in Memphis. In Florida, for instance, drones will be used to survey the mosquito population.

The city's tests revolve around food delivery and border protection.

Uber is working with San Diego, which wants to create drone landing stations and ports, according to a fact sheet released by DOT.

ShotSpotter allows the Louisville Metro Police Department to triangulate coordinates of the sound of gunfire within roughly 80 feet, and the city's drone application indicated that the camera footage from such drones would be monitored by the LMPD's Real Time Crime Center. It will partner with outdoor research facility Green Valley Farms Living Laboratory, CNN, and AirMap.
