Wall told The News & Observer in an interview on May 9 that his back was injured in the altercation and he had a cut on his arm.

"Your hands should have never been around my neck, have my hands in the ear", Wall said.

Seconds later, the officer slammed Wall to the ground in front of the gold Mercedes-Benz that Wall and his sister had posed by for pictures hours earlier.

"It's not what you're trained to do in incidents like this, but when you're dealing with someone fighting and resisting against an officer, you try to use proper tactics and go for one move, but that might not work because that person is moving or the officer is moving", Southerland told the News & Observer.

"Get your hands off me", Wall screamed.

Connors said that Wall had "brought on the issue".

While the officer's name has not been made public, the Warsaw, N.C., police department acknowledged Thursday that he comes from the department's ranks. "This young man was irate and doing things and threatening employees".

Shelby says they were short staffed so she locked the doors to clear a few tables. "Also, we must understand that this young man had broke the law". "(Wall) started a fight, and the officer's job is to make an arrest if there's a reason to", Connors said.

Wall did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

If Waffle House were to heed that call, the company would be following in the footsteps of another US corporate giant, Starbucks, which recently seized the moment of a racially-charged public relations crisis to open a wider discussion into company culture. The same night of the tragic shooting at a Nashville location, a black woman 400 miles south in Alabama was being violently arrested after disputing a store's charge for to-go plasticware. Wall was also checked out by emergency medical technicians after the incident, Connors said.

Gerald Griggs, a civil-rights activist in Atlanta, where Waffle House is based, says that all of these recurring incidents are "an epidemic of the culture around Waffle House". Connors said he has asked residents and others not to call the police department to tie up lines if they're trying to complain about the video.

Now, in the aftermath of the latest incident, Bernice King is calling for people to boycott Waffle House until the company commits to a more in-depth discussion on racism.

When a police officer arrived, he placed Wall in a chokehold before eventually taking him away in handcuffs.

Wall's video - which was shared Wednesday on Facebook - has been viewed over 1 million times.
