Zidane steps down as Real Madrid coach

31 May, 2018, 20:48 | Author: Hannah Francis

Madrid finished 18 points behind Barcelona in La Liga this season but salvaged their campaign in stunning style, beating Liverpool in to win the Champions League.

The 45-year-old announced his departure in a surprise press conference at Real Madrid's training ground on Thursday morning.

The former France global, a Champions League victor with Real in 2002 also, announced his decision at a hastily-arranged press conference with president Florentino Perez on Thursday afternoon. "I don't want this to be a goodbye but a 'see you soon".

Real president Perez added: "This was a totally unexpected decision, Zidane informed me of his choice yesterday".

The former World Player of the Year also won the Champions League in 2002 as a player with Los Blancos, scoring an emphatic volley against Bayer Leverkusen in the final at Hampden Park.

"I will be close to this club for the rest of my life".

"If I was the manager here next season, it would have been tough for us to win trophies". How can I ask more from the players? If I don't think that we can keep winning then it's time.

'He gave me the opportunity to come as a player and now manager and I am eternally grateful.

"He's an example for everyone, I hope that this doesn't serve as a farewell, I want him to return someday".

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is a strong contender to take over at the Bernabeu, but he signed a new long-term contract at Tottenham earlier this week.

The Frenchman said that his decision was made with the best intentions of the team in mind. I have to thank the fans for all their support and love. I'm not looking for another team.
