The 5-Star Movement is parliament's largest party thanks to support from southern Italy, where voters in the March election liked Di Maio's promise of a minimum income for the unemployed.

President of the European Council Donald Tusk has congratulated the new prime minister in a tweet.

The continent's euroskeptic politicians cheered the birth of the new government coalition of the 5-Star Movement and the right-wing League party. The ceremony took place in Rome.

Tunisia has largely stemmed Italy-bound human smuggling operations, but the number of Tunisian migrants who have reached Italy so far this year, 2,889, are more than the number from any other country.

Giuseppe Conte has been sworn in as Italy's Prime Minister, heading western Europe's first anti-establishment government bent on overhauling European Union rules on budgets and immigration.

Italian media reported that the lineup will face a vote of confidence on Monday or Tuesday in both houses of parliament, which it is nearly certain to win thanks to Five Star and the League's combined majority in parliament.

Salvini said it was "shameful" that Soros was invited to speak at the conference.

Conte, 53, will be officially sworn in as prime minister on Friday after Mattarella approved his Cabinet team made up of members of the Five Star, or M5S, and League political parties.

The initial failure of Conte to form a government had alarmed financial markets, which feared a quick return to the polls that risked being tantamount to a plebiscite on Italy's keeping the euro currency.

"We will work to realise the political objectives included in the government contract".

Salvini will be the new Minister of Interior, while Di Maio will be the Minister of Labour and Economic Development.

Most parliamentary parties, however, stated that they would not express confidence in Cottarelli's future government, which prompted the prime minister-designate to return his mandate to form a new government to the president.

Europe's populists and right-wingers cheered the new government as a slap in the face to Brussels, headquarters of the 28-nation European Union.

Migration experts have stated that the appointment of such a radical leader will reduce rights of migrants and asylum seekers, in a country that already has difficulties in integration.

Matteo Salvini of the League, right, stands by Luigi Di Maio, leader of Five Star, on June 1.

"Gotta stay strong or the bully boys will be after you", he warned.

The League is strongly anti-immigration and a joint plan agreed with the M5S in forming the new government reflects that stance.

"I think it's better to spend money in the countries of origin, and now if there are NGOs that want to work for free, that's fine", Salvini said.
