8th-grader wins national spelling bee

  • Participants who advanced to the final round gather on stage during the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Wednesday

Karthik Nemmani attributed his success to his father and his spelling coach. As the judges of the Scripps National Spelling Bee explain, "in a competition where letters and words reign supreme, numbers define who advances to spell another day".

Karthik Nemmani of McKinney, Texas, was declared champion of the 2018 Scripps US National Spelling Bee on Thursday night, winning on the word "koinonia".

Chillicothe's Nilla Rajan missed the word popliteal (of or relating to the back part of the leg behind the knee joint) in the fifth round after correctly spelling primavera (served with a mixture of fresh vegetables) in Thursday's initial onstage round.

Another student from North Texas, 12-year-old Naysa Modi of Frisco, came in second place. "Nilla Rajan (bottom center) celebrates as another competitor gets her words right and Brody Dicks (bottom left) racks his brains to correctly spell 'caudation" correctly. And third-place finisher Abhijay Kodali lives in Flower Mound, another 40 miles west. He correctly spelled "hypochondria" and "plangent" in Rounds 2 and 3.

Karthik and Naysa were the last two standing of the initial 516 spellers.

"I think it's wonderful".

Aidan won the Treasure State title, which automatically qualified him for the national event, his second appearance there. "I'm trying not to make that my standard", she said Wednesday.

The finals began with 41 spellers, and the number slowly dwindled over five rounds, but there was never a mass exodus from the stage.

With the exception of the word "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious", which, for some inexplicable reason, is a most searched-for word for people in six states, most of the other words on this map are pretty utilitarian and are likely words that pop up in work emails.

Erin Howard, 13, of Huntsville, Ala., who tied for seventh past year, misspelled "funest", adding an extra "e" at the end of the word.

Yet amid the bigger Bee, returning spellers continued their dominance, even though a first-time competitor won.
