All systems go for historic Trump-Kim summit, Singapore says

Trump seems to want to. China - North Korea's only ally - has long pushed for dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang. And there is a possibility of something like that.

"We would win that war thousand times out of a thousand", he said.

Trump also praised the North Koreans, saying they have been "really working very well with us" during preparations for the summit, even though Trump had cancelled the summit last month following a recent period of what he called "tremendous anger and open hostility" from the North Korean government.

In a New Year's address, Kim said his country had completed development of its nuclear programme and would focus on economic development, suggesting a meeting with South Korea.

In short, there might not be enough leaders in Singapore. Trump wants Kim to dismantle his nuclear arsenal entirely, thus giving up his only real deterrent and bargaining chip. He's also specifically questioned the need for so many troops in South Korea, asking in 2016, "What are we getting for this?" He's only 34 and may see diplomacy as the best way to stay in power long after Moon and Trump are gone from the scene.

Kristof tells CBC's Susan Ormiston that while denuclearization and peace between North and South Korea are centre-stage at the June 12 summit, it's important not to forget the troubling human rights issues in North Korea.

Steffen Seibert posted this photo on Twitter showing world leaders at the G-7 summit on June 9, 2018, in La Malbaie, Quebec, Canada.

Trump delivered off-script comments as he was leaving a G-7 summit in Canada, a meeting at which he was at odds with US allies on issues such as trade.

"It's a fairly big process".

But Trump - for whom a major accomplishment would bolster his position ahead of midterm elections in November - baffled observers when he said he did not think he had to prepare "very much" for the summit. "And I think we should make that clear". "At the same time, Trump, by having signed or agreed to it himself, will become a captive of the agreement, and will find it politically hard to scuttle the deal".

North Korea's willingness to develop fuel and weapons in secret, to sell nuclear technology and missiles to other rogue states, and its attempts to use its status as a nuclear power as a negotiating tool are features, not bugs, of its defence and foreign policy.

North Korea objects to the notion that it should give up its program up front and quickly with little concessions from the U.S. side, said Frank Aum, senior expert on North Korea at the U.S. Institute of Peace.

The stakes are high, with American authorities warning that North Korea could soon have the ability to strike anywhere in the continental U.S.

It may be the strangest feeling in decades to descend on the Korean Peninsula - a wave of optimism, and not always of the cautious variety, when it comes to North Korea and its nuclear bombs. This means that a push for a peace treaty could require South Koreans to ask whether they should discard their cherished national goal of unification and accept a legally-binding permanent division, Bong said.
