It's been a long road for Apple and Samsung's legal dispute over accusations that the latter copied ideas from the iPhone back in 2011. Specifically, both companies, based on the court documents, have made a decision to drop and settle the remaining claims, including counter claims, in the legal battle.
Neither Apple nor Samsung has commented on this new development.
Indeed in parallel with the court case - and the evolving iPhone - Apple has also been working to extricate itself from its dependence on Samsung's components.
Documents filed with the Northern District Court of California this morning indicate that both parties have agreed to drop and settle the remaining claims and counter claims in their legal battle. Back in May, Samsung was ordered by the jury to pay Apple $538m in damages. It was unclear how this week's ruling would affect that settlement.
Last month it said: "We believe deeply in the value of design, and our teams work tirelessly to create innovative products that delight our customers. It is important that we continue to protect the hard work and innovation of so many people at Apple". In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court threw out the $399 million decision and ordered the case to virtually restart in San Jose.
The lawsuit started in 2011, when Apple alleged that Samsung's Nexus Android phones infringed on Apple's patents, trademarks, user interface and style. When the case finally went to trial in 2012, Apple emerged victorious, with a jury awarding Apple $1 billion in damages.
According to Bloomberg, the two smartphone giants have now reached an out-of-court settlement, putting an end to the seven-year patent fight.
Samsung appealed part of that award, taking its case all the way to the Supreme Court, arguing that damages should be limited since patent infringement involved only certain features.
