Apple's App Store bans on-device cryptocurrency mining

  • Apple has previously blocked apps for supporting cryptocurrencies it disapproves

According to a report by CNBC, the tech giant recently updated developer guidelines, shifting its stance toward mining for digital currencies like bitcoin.

In March 2018, 9to5Macreported that Apple pulled a calendar app from its App Store for violating the efficient power guidelines.

Apple has updated the Review Guidelines for the App Store and the company has banned the apps that mine cryptocurrency on its devices across Apple platform.

Cryptocurrency mining is often done on the sly. It should be noted that the upcoming smartphones such as HTC Exodus and the Sirin Finney that support Blockchain will also not be able to have power to handle cryptocurrency mining. At that time too Apple had mentioned battery drain and excessive heat as the reasons to implement the ban. While you're highly unlikely to be able to mine a Bitcoin on your iPhone as it requires quite a lot of computational effort - after the recent policy update - Apple won't allow you to mine even less energy-intensive cryptocurrencies directly.

The move may seem a little moot to some as the processing grunt needed to crunch the calculations created to generate or "mine" cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are beyond the power levels of even the iPhone X's A11 Bionic chip.

However, mining for cryptocurrency is only acceptable if "performed off-device", such as in the case of cloud-based mining.

The move allows US iPhone users to share their health record data with third-party apps from autumn.

While the idea of mining cryptocurrency on an iPhone is nearly laughable, the message doesn't appear to be targeting apps built for the goal of mining cryptocurrency; those were already banned in a 2014 update. It also insisted that apps involved in Initial Coin Offerings, cryptocurrency futures trading and the like had to come from established banks, securities firms, futures commissions merchants or other approved financial institutions.
