  • Beilein says he's staying at

The 65-year-old Beilein has coached at MI for 11 seasons.

The University of MI men's basketball coach announced his plans to return to Ann Arbor for the 2018-19 season, and many seasons after that.

Former Raptors head coach Dwane Casey is considered the favorite to land the Pistons job.

Beilein led the Wolverines to the NCAA Tournament Championship game this past season, before falling to Villanova.

Beilein has been the coach of the Wolverines for the last 11 seasons, and already has the most wins in program history. Detroit has been looking for a coach for a month since firing Stan Van Gundy, who was also its president of basketball operations. His college coaching career began in 1978 at Erie Community College, and he went on to Nazareth and Le Moyne. MI got good news recently when Charles Matthews took his name out of NBA Draft consideration and chose to come back for his junior season. The extension was in the works before Beilein interviewed with the Pistons and was not a result of his decision to meet with the National Basketball Association team. The Wolverines have made the title game twice under Beilein: this year, and in 2013 against Louisville. "Beilein had talked separately with Gores and Detroit management in process, league sources said".
