The Boring Company claims that their technology will be capable of transporting people from O'Hare Airport to Block 37 in downtown Chicago in just 12 minutes.

The plan for the "Chicago Express Loop, " announced early Thursday by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Musk's tunneling firm, calls for the construction of an underground tunnel with concrete tracks on which "skates" - individual vehicles built on a modified Tesla X chassis - would carry 8 to 16 passengers at between 125 to 150 miles per hour from one of the world's busiest airports underneath some of the country's most congested roads.

Elon Musk's venture was picked to finance and build an express train from the downtown Loop neighborhood to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced.

Prices for the express service have not been set, but The Boring Company's proposal said that they'll be more expensive than the Blue Line, but cheaper than a vehicle service.

"We're really excited to work with the Mayor and the City to bring this new high-speed public transportation system to Chicago!" the company said in a tweet.

Musk's flagship electric vehicle company Tesla Inc. struggled last year to turn an annual profit for the first time in its 15 years of doing business.

Musk unveiled a plan last month in Los Angeles to build tunnels beneath the city for a high-speed network of "personalized mass transit", promising to build it without disturbance or noise at the surface. The trip now takes 30 to 45 minutes.

Though it may sound similar in design to a subway system, the Boring company is quick to point out that the electric skates will move faster than subway cars and they'll be completely autonomous. The Boring Company will fund the project in its entirety.

Officials from city and Boring have stated that it's too soon to estimate a timeframe or final cost for this project, but have stated that Boring will be fronting the bill. It received permits to start digging in Washington, DC, and in Los Angeles.

Musk is banking on being able to tunnel much faster than any other company, although his technology remains unproven.

"Given his track record, we are taking his reputation and saying, "This is a guy in two other transportation modes who has not failed". A trip would cost $20 to $25. "Almost like an autonomous, underground, multi-level auto system". The skates, according to a fact-sheet from the company, would likely run every 30 seconds, 20 hours per day, the company said. A lengthy write-up in The Chicago Tribune says that the total cost of the project could be around $1 billion, according to unnamed sources with knowledge on the matter.
