Peru again impressed, as they had in their opening round defeat to Denmark, but couldn't find a way to unlock a well-organised French defence.

Peru, unfortunate to lose 1-0 to Denmark in their first game, took until the half-hour to have their first serious chance, with recalled skipper Paolo Guerrero stinging the legs of Hugo Lloris.

France had been pushed back by their plucky opponents, who enjoyed more possession and made more successful passes than Les Bleus but could not end their 40-year wait for a goal on football's biggest global stage.

Denmark's 1-1 draw with Australia earlier on Thursday means that Peru can not overhaul them in the Group C table, and sets up a showdown between France and the Scandanavians to see who tops the group.

Guerrero had one of Peru's best chances in the 87th minute from a free kick, but his attempt went right at Lloris. Mbappe got his first chance when Paul Pogba sent in a delightful ball into the box but was was not able to connect.

The teenage forward tapped in a ball headed toward goal in the 34th minute to give France a 1-0 victory over Peru on Thursday (Friday NZ Time).
