One of Central America's most active volcanos erupted in fiery explosions of ash and molten rock Sunday, killing at least seven people and injuring 20 while a towering cloud of smoke blanketed nearby villages in heavy ash.

The volcano is located some 25 miles south-west of Guatemala City and has been spewing smoke and ash.

Officials said the dead were so far all concentrated in three towns: El Rodeo, Alotenango and San Miguel los Lotes.

TRT World spoke with Antigua-based journalist Louisa Reynolds for more details.

The charred bodies of victims laid on the steaming, ashen remnants of a pyroclastic flow as rescuers attended to badly injured victims in the aftermath of the eruption.

Villages in the Escuintla department were affected, too, CONRED Executive Secretary Sergio García Cabañas said.

Six people are dead and 20 have been injured after Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupted on Sunday.

Cabanas said one of those killed was a CONRED employee. Some 3,100 people have been evacuated from the area.

The conical Volcan de Fuego reaches an altitude of 3,763 metres above sea level at its peak. "I think they ended up buried", Consuelo Hernandez, a resident of the village of El Rodeo, told the newspaper Diario de Centroamerica.

The eruption forced the Guatemala City's La Aurora worldwide airport to shut down its only runway. "Where we saw the lava fall, we ran to a hillside" to escape, she added.

Residents have been urged to wear masks due to the falling ash.

Officials said the volcanic eruption still presented a danger and could cause more mud and pyroclastic flows.

Explosions are still coming from the volcano, said Eddy Sánchez, director of the National Institute for Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology of Guatemala known as INSIVUMEH.

David de Leon, spokesman for the disaster agency, said authorities had already evacuated about 300 people from nearby areas.
