Injury wrecks Williams' audacious French title bid

  • VOTE: French Open women's winner? Simona Halep, Maria Sharapova, and Serena Williams in contention

The American tennis player, who is the 23-time Grand Slam champion, was set to face Sharapova on Monday.

"I've unfortunately been having issues with my pec muscle and unfortunately it's been getting worse", Williams told reporters.

"It is hard to play when I can't physically serve".

However Williams' coach Patrick Mouratoglou said the decision was made to preserve her Wimbledon hopes.

With Williams playing her first major in almost 18 months, only her third tournament since giving birth to daughter Olympia, the playing field had been evened a little.

Goolagong Cawley was in the stands on Court Philippe-Chatrier with daughter Kelly eager to see how Williams' comeback was coming along before the 23-times major victor withdrew from her scheduled fourth-round showdown with Maria Sharapova on Monday night (AEST).

"Just try to think of the bigger picture, hopefully the next event, and the rest of the year".

The story of the day came off the court, however, as Williams confirmed she would not be able to play her match with Sharapova due to injury.

The showdown was billed as the most anticipated women's match of the year.

The athlete said she first noticed chest pain during a victorious match against Julia Görges on Saturday, June 2. "I had such a wonderful performance in my first Grand Slam back", she added. "It's a match I always get up for and her game matches up against mine". In my doubles yesterday I tried a lot of different tapings and support. She told reporters, "I thought it was a flawless opportunity to see how I was going".

But many fans feel this latest inquiry fired at Serena - which is now a moot point since she dropped out of the French Open earlier today because of an injury - is probably the most preposterous.

-When you buy Tennis Channel Plus, your 12-month subscription gets you access to every ATP Masters 1000 tournament played outside the US, and every round through the finals of WTA Indian Wells, Miami and Cincinnati. She didn't miss one ball, and she was playing very close to the lines. I've made every sacrifice I could.

Her withdrawal allows Sharapova, a two-time French Open champion, to move into the quarterfinals. You know, it's just a match I always get up for.

"I don't have any negative feelings towards her, which again, was a little disappointing to see in that hearsay book".

Serena was seen facing difficulty in even lifting her bag off court after her match on Sunday.

Sharapova will go on to face either Lesia Tsurenko or 2016 champion Garbine Muguruza in the last-eight.
