  • Kim Jong-Un is in China for third visit with Xi Jinping

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reportedly shared a mutual laugh with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on their first meeting that he would go on to describe as a success - despite joking that he was trying to kill Kim.

Kim will be in Beijing through Wednesday, state media previously reported.

The visit will be Kim's third in recent months to China, North Korea's main ally and key source of trade and assistance.

"Also, our government hopes China will play a constructive role in resolving this problem - we hope Chairman Kim Jong Un's visit will contribute to that". The two leaders also inspected the guard of honour.

"Kim is reaching out to traditional friends and rivals and it really complicates the U.S. position of maximizing pressure on North Korea", said Stephen Nagy, a senior associate professor at the International Christian University in Tokyo.

When asked why the visit was announced during Kim's stay this time, Geng merely said that "specific circumstances around each visit have their own specific arrangements".

Trump agreed to work with Kim toward complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, committed to provide the North with security guarantees and pledged to end "war games" with South Korea, which North Korea and China have long seen as provocative.

-North Korean denuclearization talks, having provided chartered aircraft for Kim to travel to and from Singapore for the summit. Their willingness to keep a hard line on economic sanctions might get impacted by the burgeoning trade war between the U.S. and China, especially since it's targeted at Beijing's CM2025 strategy for dominance in the region.

Susan Rice, President Barack Obama's former national security adviser, said Sunday on CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS the summit was a bigger win for Pyongyang.

Kim is seeking relief from economic sanctions in return for his pledge to denuclearise and is believed to be seeking support from China for that, Japan's Nikkei business daily said in a dispatch from Beijing. But on Tuesday, the USA and South Korean militaries confirmed they had called off a scheduled major joint exercise following Trump's order. Neither China or North Korea have released details about what the trip is for or an itinerary.

"If the two parties can solidly implement the summit's consensus step by step, it will open a new, important phase of the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula".

"I think China sees that as a way to enhance its leverage and position", Sen said.

In the run-up to the Singapore summit, Kim visited China twice to meet with Xi. For its part, China has been warning of strong retaliation.

President Trump on Monday suggested a double standard in news media coverage of his achievements and those of President Barack Obama, going on Twitter to complain that his predecessor would have received far more credit for meeting with the North Korean dictator. Analysts said Beijing appeared to be trying to normalize such visits.

During a joint press conference with Pompeo, Wang said China would like the United States and North Korea to see the summit as?a new starting point? from which they can?maintain a momentum of dialogue and consultation, accommodate each other's legitimate concerns, and work with other parties to advance the process of denuclearisation and the political settlement of the peninsula issue?.
