Lakers "Racing" To Acquire Kawhi Leonard Before Friday

While Magic Johnson plays it cool regarding his chances to add major free agents to the Los Angeles Lakers, pressure to create his own superteam in L.A. may be mounting behind the scenes. A Southern California native, Leonard reportedly wants to defect to the Lakers, but that team has a hard choice to make in terms of how many assets to offer the Spurs in a trade, as opposed to possibly being able to wait a year and sign him in free agency.

LeBron James, right, might be hoping to have Kawhi Leonard on his side this season. They may end up being forced to surrender young assets like Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma and Josh Hart, future first-round picks and maybe even a sign-and-trade agreement with restricted free agent Julius Randle, according to ESPN.

LeBron James (23) of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Kawhi Leonard (2) of the San Antonio Spurs fight for position during a game on March 27, 2017 at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

While James and Leonard teaming up would make the Lakers instant championship contenders, the Spurs are reportedly asking for a significant return. But if Leonard is set on going to Los Angeles next year, Ainge probably won't want to part with much, and would likely be unwilling to give up Jaylen Brown, who was one of Boston's most reliable players in just his second National Basketball Association season.

Aldridge's relationship with coach Gregg Popovich and Spurs brass has been just as rocky as Leonard's has at times, and it was Aldridge who was on the trade block first.

The Spurs do not have to rush to make a deal, as they could potentially wait until the trade deadline to finally pull the trigger.

That help would most likely come in the form of Kawhi Leonard or Paul George - or, ideally, both - but there are some other possibilities, including Chris Paul, James's longtime friend. Free agency is days away, and reports suggest James wants to make his free agency decision quickly.

It is true that the Spurs have no leverage whatsoever, because the sense is that Leonard is not going to play for them again.
