McEnroe says Serena should be seeded at Wimbledon

  • U.S. Open will factor maternity leave into seedings

Adams, the USTA official, offered no guarantees to Williams in regard to seeding at the US Open later this summer, but did tell The Times that officials would "revise the seedings if pregnancy is a factor in the current rankings of a player".

The French Open drew criticism last month for not seeding Serena Williams, who was playing her first major tournament since giving birth to her first child last September.

McEnroe insisted that his compatriot - a 23-time Grand Slam champion - should be seeded somewhere between 1st and 10th in an ideal world, but, at worst, 16th.

Williams, ranked 183rd, is a seven-time Wimbledon champion who will learn Wednesday whether or not she will be seeded for next month's Grand Slam grass showdown in England.

The news comes just weeks after the French Open came under fire for how it handled the ranking of Serena Williams. She had planned to play at the Australian Open but had to withdraw as she did not feel she was at a stage where she could give 100 per cent.

The seeding meeting is due to take place on 26 June.

Under current WTA rules, rankings are not protected for players who are injured or pregnant.

The U.S. Open, the second biggest tournament of the tennis year, will no longer penalize players whose rankings have tumbled because of maternity leave, starting with this year's tournament in August. The organization said it would reconsider its position.

The American did not play at the lawn competition last year as she was heavily pregnant although she remains the favourite this year in the eyes of many despite her lack of time on court.

- After a barren six-year spell marred by Wimbledon final defeats against Venus and Maria Sharapova, it was Serena's time to regain her throne.

Each of the sport's four majors - Wimbledon and the Australian, French and US opens - has the prerogative to seed players as it sees fit to ensure a balanced tournament.

"You know, I think it's great".
