Representatives of the Koreas, meanwhile, agreed Friday to hold "inter-Korean general-level military talks" June 14 to ease military tensions on the Korean Peninsula, according to South Korea's Unification Ministry.

Mr. Pompeo began his discussions with Gen. Kim by hosting a dinner on Wednesday night. Trump said that Xi "has helped me quite a bit with this".

"We'll see, and hopefully we'll have a meeting on the 12th; that's going along very well, but I want it to be meaningful", Trump noted Thursday. "It doesn't mean it gets all done at one meeting".

Pompeo spoke after meeting with Kim Yong-chol for a little more than two hours at the residence of the deputy US ambassador to the United Nations. "Steak, corn, and cheese on the menu", Pompeo tweeted.

The talks come as preparations for the highly anticipated summit in Singapore were barrelling forward on both sides of the Pacific Ocean, despite lingering uncertainty about whether it will really occur, and when.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, center, escorts North Korean Kim Yong Chol, left, to the White House, June 1, 2018, for a meeting with President Donald Trump.

The president said he expected a number of summits would be needed to settle all outstanding issues.

"It went very well", President Trump told reporters on the White House lawn.

"I look forward to the day I can take the sanctions off North Korea", Trump said.

The president said he believed Kim wanted a deal.

Trump cautioned on Thursday that while he hopes a planned summit in Singapore on June 12 between the US and North Korea is still in the cards, he wants it to be a "meaningful" meeting.

Despite the upbeat messaging in the United States, Kim Jong Un, in a meeting with Russia's foreign minister on Thursday, complained about the U.S. trying to spread its influence in the region, a comment that may complicate the summit. That from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The United States has been demanding that North Korea abandon its nuclear weapons program amid reports that it is close to being able to launch a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the United States. "I said, 'Would you want me to open it?' He said, 'You can read it later.' I may be in for a big surprise, folks!"

His comments will stoke fears that the tempestuous relationship between Mr Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un could yet spiral into World War 3. A letter being delivered to me from Kim Jong-un.

Trump says his June 12 meeting will be "a beginning". The last official of his stature to visit the United States was Jo Myong Rok, the late first vice chairman of the National Defence Commission, who visited Washington in 2000, South Korea's Unification Ministry said.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders also expressed optimism about a nuclear summit.

The meeting followed two landmark summits between the leaders of North and South Korea in the last five weeks.

Washington is determined that Kim should agree to what United States officials call the "complete, verifiable and irreversible" end of North Korea's nuclear weapons and intercontinental missile programs.
